A Little About This Song…

The origins of Down in the Valley are Irish, from the Connemara Lullaby. The familiar words reprinted here, or variants of them, were sung in the hills of Kentucky in areas settled mainly by Brits, Scots, and the Irish around 1800. Verses have been added at various times, but it was first published in 1917 in the Journal of American Folklore.

One derivative song, “The Birmingham Jail”, was a big hit for numerous Country & Western artists in the 1960s.
