A Little About This Song…

A.P. Carter is often attributed with authorship but this song was first published Louis Meyer in 1877 as Are You Tired of Me, Darling? Its earliest recording was made by Lester McFarland and Robert Gardner in 1926. The Carter Family recorded Are You Tired of Me, My Darling? in 1934 for Victor Records.

Authorship credits belong to P.G. Cook (music) and Ralph Roland (lyrics). Not many singers wander far from the original lyrics, but you will find a good number of melody variations.

Tim O’Brien’s Hot Rize and Nanci Griffith are among those who have recorded memorable contemporary arrangements of it.
