A Little About This Song…

In 1831, theology student Samual Francis Smith set down the words to My Country Tis of Thee – also called simply “America” – inspired by a melody from Muzio Clementi’s “Symphony No. 3”, the same melody used for the UK’s national anthem, “God Save The Queen“.  Long before the “Star Spangled Banner” was adopted as America’s national anthem a hundred years later, this song was a tall favorite at patriotic, church, school and public gatherings everywhere.
