Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier is an American Revolutionary War ballad once known as “Buttermilk Hill” based on the Irish tune “Shule Aroon”. The American lyrics appear to have been written in Colonial days, resurfaced during the Civil War, and again as a powerful protest song during the Vietnam War. Peter, Paul & Mary often performed their own version, “Gone the Rainbow”.
