A Little About This Song…

Stephen Foster is one of America’s most well known songwriters. Though Foster was from Pittsburgh, he wrote minstrel music in the Southern style. He only visited the South once briefly, yet he loved the music from that region. Foster’s first song was published when he was just 18, and within two years he had written Oh! Susanna, which would become the anthem of the California Gold Rush in 1848-1849.

“Hard Times, Come Again No More” was written in 1854. It’s a sentimental tune begging for compassion for the down-trodden. The song became a favorite of both Yankees and Confederates during the Civil War. It was first recorded on wax cylinder for the Edison Company in 1905.
