A Little About This Song…

“The Gypsy Laddie” (Child Ballad #200), a Scottish ballad thought to have been written around 1720, is the grandparent of Black Jack Davy (also spelled ‘Davey’) as well as “The Raggle Taggle Gypsy” and similar titles. The song spawned many variations in Scotland and England in the 18th century, and the United States and Canada in the 19th century. The Carter Family recorded a lively version of it in 1940, Woody Guthrie a year later. It was found throughout the Appalachian Mountains, often sung a cappella.
