The Battle Hymn of the Republic is one of American’s most revered patriotic songs. It was written by Julia Ward Howe in 1861 to the tune from “John Brown’s Body”, a hugely popular war song of the that day (its melody was borrowed from a Methodist hymn by William Steffe, “Say, Brothers, Will You Meet Us?”).
